What are the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS)? Brief Guide (2014)
Please note that this has not been updated since it was published.
Councils have to ensure that people who are unable to make their own decisions about where they live are safeguarded from having their liberty restricted. It is essential that the public, families and carers understand what these safeguards are.
This Brief Guide provides a jargon-free introduction to the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS), explains how they work and sets out what to expect.
This is an updated and revised version of the original Brief Guide (first published in June 2013) and takes into account the Supreme Court ruling in 2014 that further clarified the legal definition of being ‘deprived of liberty’.
