Who is at most risk of suicide?
In 2016 there were 4,941 deaths by suicide in England and Wales (Office for National Statistics). Records published by the Office for National Statistics also show that men, divorced people and those living in less well-off areas are at greater risk of suicide.
However, these figures only tell part of the story. In the same year, Samaritans reported over 770,000 contacts from people who said that they were experiencing or had experienced suicial thoughts and feelings.
There were fewer deaths by suicide in 2016 than the previous three years, but there is still work to be done to understand who may be at risk, and to improve early access to support.
