INVOLVE is funded by the Department of Health to promote and support active public involvement in NHS, public health and social care research. INVOLVE believes that involving members of the public leads to research that is relevant to people's needs and concerns, more reliable and more likely to be used.

3 IDeA (Improvement and Development Agency)
IDeA has been developed by the Local Government Association and supports local authorities in developing ways to improve the services they deliver to their communities. It is particularly concerned with the development of leadership and hosts a variety of development programmes, including the Leadership Academy for elected members. It operates the Beacon Councils network. IDeA has carried out work on a wide range of issues, including Best Value, recruitment and retention of social care staff, and local strategic partnerships.

4 Self Directed Care Support Network
The Self Directed Care Support will bring together everyone who is interested in transforming the social care system including people who use services and their families, professionals and service providers. It will help Local Authorities not involved in Individual Budget Pilots to explore ways in which they can expand choice and control through personalized support.

5 In Control
The mission of in Control is to change the organisation of social care so that people who need support can take more control of their own lives and fulfil their roles as full citizens. The aim is the complete transformation of social care into a system of Self-Directed Support. and it operates on the basis of seven key principles. in Control is a partnership organisation with almost 100 local authorities in England as partners. The original in Control pilot developments were a major influence on the development of the current Individual Budget pilots.

7 Self Assessment Pilots
People with long term health and social care needs are being given the option to self assess their need for home care and equipment, as part of a series of 11 pilot schemes which will run until 30 September 2007.

8 Invest to Save
The Invest to Save Budget (ISB) is a joint Treasury/Cabinet Office initiative with an aim to create sustainable improvements in the capacity to deliver public services in a more joined up manner. A key principle of the ISB programme is that investment is provided in return for reform.

9 Linkage Plus
The Government launched eight new pilots to support older people in the heart of their communities. The LinkAge Plus initiative will enable people over 50 to access a whole range of services such as help with housing and access to transport, health services, employment advice and information about volunteering opportunities.

The website of the Mental Health Foundation provides useful policy resources relating to both mental health and learning disability.

11 Innovation Forum
The Innovation Forum was created in 2003 to promote dialogue on delivering better services. It consists of local authorities that achieve 'excellent' or 'Four Star' status in their Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA). The forum seeks to develop, explore, test and disseminate new ways of working to deliver improved outcomes for local people. Current rojects include community safety, reducing hospital admissions for older people and integrated public services.

12 Local Strategic Partnerships
A Local Strategic Partnership (LSPs) is a single non-statutory, multi-agency body, which matches local authority boundaries, and aims to bring together at a local level the different parts of the public, private, community and voluntary sectors. LSPs are key to tackling deep-seated, multi-faceted problems, requiring a range of responses from different bodies. Local partners working through a LSP will be expected to take many of the major decisions about priorities and funding for their local area. These are seenas central to the neighbourhood renewal strategy along with Neighbourhood Renewal Community Chests and the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund. The aim is to draw key local providers into a single partnership in which the community is actively engaged. The partnerships are essentially co-ordinating and umbrella agencies that draw together the private, business, strategy and voluntary sectors.

The King's Fund is an independent charitable foundation working for better health, especially in London. Its goals are to help develop: informed policy, by undertaking original research and providing objective analysis; effective services, by fostering innovation and helping put ideas into action; and skilled people, by building understanding, capacity and leadership.

15 Department of Communities and Local Government
Formerly the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM), the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) was created in May 2006 with a remit to promote community cohesion and equality, as well as responsibility for housing, urban regeneration, planning and ocal government.

16 Care Services Improvement Partnership (CSIP)
The Care Services Improvement Partnership was created in April 2005 and brings together a number of former organisations, the National Institute for Mental Health in England (NIMHE), the Change Agent Team, and the Valuing People Support Team. Organised through eight regional development centres, it seeks to work with health, local government, public, voluntary and private sectors to help improve services and outcomes for children, families, adults and older people including those with mental health problems, learning and/or physical disabilities.

17 Vulnerable adults
The Government is determined that vulnerable adults should be afforded the greatest protection possible from harm. In addition to raising standards of care through National Service Frameworks, regulating providers of care in a more thorough and consistent way than hitherto, and introducing national minimum standards for regulated care services, the Government has taken action to specifically address the abuse of vulnerable adults.

The white paper Valuing People: A New Strategy for Learning Disability for the 21st Century was published on 20 March 2001. It is the first whit paper on learning disability for thirty years and sets out an ambitious and challenging programme of action for improving services.

20 Supporting People
The Supporting People programme offers vulnerable people the opportunity to improve their quality of life by providing a stable environment which enables greater independence. It will deliver high quality and strategically planned housing-related services which are cost effective and reliable, and complement existing care services. The planning and development of services will be needs led. Supporting People is a working partnership of local government, service users and support agencies.
